No two people engage in treatment in the same way. As individuals, we all have different belief systems, thoughts, and ideas about what is right for us. If two people do a task differently, both with successful outcomes, did one do it the ‘right’ way and the other the ‘wrong’ way? The answer is no – they were able to achieve the same result working with the methods that were effective for them. Treatment and ongoing support are similar in this respect, in what works for one person may not work for another.
This is where alternatives to traditional methods, such as 12-Step, come into play. Addiction is a chronic disease, often with high relapse rates. Healthy continuing peer support systems have been proven effective in reducing relapse and aiding in sustained abstinence from substances. For individuals who don’t embrace the philosophies of AA, NA, or other 12-Step based groups, there are options out there. SMART Recovery, Celebrate Recovery, Women for Sobriety and more exist so that everyone can find something that will benefit them.
We often engage in support with the misconception that we have to believe in every facet of something for it to be helpful or effective, and this just isn’t true. Like with anything in life, one can pull bits and pieces from different areas to cultivate a support program that meets their individual needs. Support is not a zero-sum scenario; everyone has the opportunity to figure out what works for them and how to incorporate that into their ongoing recovery plan. Our role at Defining Wellness Centers isn’t to place emphasis on one form of support over another, but to educate our clients on all options available to them.
SMART Recovery
SMART Recovery stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training and is a global community of mutual support groups. Meetings are free and open to anyone seeking science-based, self-empowered addiction recovery. Addiction does not have to be substance oriented; SMART Recovery participants help one another address problems with all addictions, included drugs, alcohol, gambling, food, etc. The goal is to find and develop the power within oneself to change and lead fulfilling and balanced lives.
