Physical Health & Fitness Program
Empowerment Through Nutrition
Physical health is an important part of one’s wellness journey. When abusing the body with drugs and alcohol, it gets run down and doesn’t function well. Often, substances become the number one priority, and nutritional nourishment and physical fitness take a backseat. Defining Wellness Centers prioritizes a healthy you – mentally, emotionally and physically. We work with you to reach your goals and get your body strong so that you can have the physical strength and stamina to face the emotional issues you address throughout treatment.
When clients enter our program, they initially undergo a detox phase of treatment, where illicit substances are purged from the body. Nutritious meals are served, prepared by our talented culinary team at The Kitchen Table. Rebuilding physical strength and overall health is important as it provides energy to sustain you throughout the day. Our medical team works with you to determine if there are any nutritional deficiencies that need to be addressed during your stay and we implement an action plan as needed.

Optimize Your Physical Well-being
Once nutritional needs are addressed, we work with each client to develop a fitness plan. The focus is on overall health and strength, and we collaboratively incorporate personal goals into the plan. Perhaps you want to build muscle tone, move around without pain, eventually run a marathon, or lose weight – we’ll help you get there. Our physical fitness team guides you on this part of your journey, providing training sessions to help you meet your goals. Utilizing a variety of traditional and artificial intelligence (AI) equipped gym equipment, you have many tools at your disposal. We support and encourage mediums that strengthen one’s core and help the body move with ease, such as yoga, Pilates, and Tai chi. They also offer meditative benefits, which can be wonderful for your mental and emotional wellness. Walking is one of the best exercises you can engage in and being that we’re blessed with warm weather almost year-round, we encourage everyone to get out and take a walk on our peaceful property. Breathing in the fresh air, smelling the pine trees, and feeling the sunshine on your face are all added benefits.
If you prefer to spend your time in the fitness center, we have a variety of weight machines, free weights, treadmills, bicycles, and elliptical machines that clients can use. We also have an indoor basketball court where you can play a game or practice your free-throw. When you need to exert physical energy, you have plenty of options. We have pickleball courts on-site. Re-engaging in fun activities while sober can be extremely positive for one’s overall well-being and recovery.

The Benefits of Exercise
Exercise provides many health benefits, from increased mood and energy levels to reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, depression, and anxiety. You can engage in it by yourself or with others, making it a fun and social group activity.
Some of the many benefits of exercise are:
- Improved energy and endurance
- Healthier sleep behaviors
- Maintain a healthy weight
Combats health conditions and diseases such as:
- Stroke
- Metabolic Syndrome
- High Blood Pressure
- Arthritis
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Dementia
According to the US Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 30-60 minutes of exercise three to five days per week is optimal for mood benefits. If you’re short on time, 20 minutes of exercise can boost your mood for 12 hours and cardio and strength training can also give you a lift. Harvard Medical School has shown that aerobic exercise helps curb stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline while flooding your system with feel-good endorphins.
